Leader Interview Report

One of the key elements that help organizations prosper is leadership. Through leadership, organizations can achieve their set goals and fulfill the responsibilities they have towards the society, the government, and other relevant stakeholders (Miner, 2005). It is hard not to underline the importance of leadership, and it is with this that I decided to conduct research on the concept. The current paper gives a reflection of an interview I conducted on James Paul, the managing director of one of the leading grocery stores in my local area.

 

Basic Information

James Paul, a father of two and aged 35 years, is the owner and managing director of Fresh Deliveries, one of the popular stores in my local area. Since its opening in 2008, the chain has continued to achieve tremendous growth over years. Several factors show the success that the organization has made under James' leadership. For instance, Fresh Deliveries has increased the number of its employees from 20 to around 200 people. Besides, the company has opened up new branches to serve the ever-increasing number of its customers. The companys growth is well documented by the fact that it has increased the number of the products that it sells to people.

Style of Leading

From the interview that I conducted on James, I was able to find some of his leadership styles that have made him successfully propel his company. First, James has been a firm believer of and practiced the democratic leadership style. He believes that it is through running the company democratically that he can be able to relate well with the employees. It is of the democratic leadership style that has made him include his employees in the decision-making process. During the interview, James stated that he considered his employees to be an important element that was responsible for his company's growth. It is with this notion that he decided to give them a leading role in the decision-making process. According to Paul, involving the employees in the decision-making process meant that they would work diligently without failure, as they know beforehand what is required of them due to their involvement in making crucial decisions. Involving the employees in making crucial decisions helped underline their importance to the organization, something that motivates them even further to produce impressive results (Iorg, 2007). It is the motivation employees possessed that made them produce impressive results that propelled the company to achieving yearly growth.

In addition to using the democratic leadership style, Paul has integrated transformational leadership style into the way he runs things in his company. The company's motto transforming people's diet' is demonstrative enough about the transformational leadership used in the company. The fact that employees are considered to be important in the company's success is the reason why Paul has taken measures to transform their lives. For instance, there are schemes in place in the company to help improve the lives of the employees. James believes that helping the employees change their daily routines motivates them to give their all while working at the company, as they can realize its role in transforming their lives. Still on this stage, Paul believes that helping people transform their lives regarding the things that they eat gives his company the competitive edge. The fact that the company has been able to have an advantage over its rivals is the reason it has continued to make progress regarding development.

During the interview, I was able to note that James Paul has adopted a servant leadership. Many were the times when I could see him helping his workers in the tasks assigned to them. For instance, there was a time he helped one of the employees lift a huge carton. In the conversations that I had with some of his employees, they claimed that they were astonished by his humility and passion to help them grow and achieve their set targets. The servant leadership style of management has had an impact on his employees, something that I was able to realize during several conversations I had with some of them. According to the employees working in James' company, the servant leadership style that he has adopted has made them loyal to him and his company. The loyalty developed in the employees mean that they can resist any approach from a rival company wanting them to work for it (French, 2011).

Personal Characteristics

In addition to the leadership styles that Paul has successfully used to drive his company forward, some personal characteristics have helped him achieve his success with one of them being humility. Despite his status of the owner and managing director of the company, James gets along well with his subordinates, something that is compounded by the fact that he helps them carry out their responsibilities. The close relationship between the managing director and the company employees has helped improve their productivity and, thus, the continued trend of growth.

Commitment is the other personal feature that Paul possesses. Even though the companys growth has made it open numerous branches, he ensures that he visits all of them every week. James believes that being committed to the company sets a good example for the employees. Besides, being committed to the organization makes it easy for him to understand its needs and get ideas of how to push it forward. The commitment that the owner has for the organization helps in the quick identification of its problems. For instance, there was a time he was able to identify quickly and sack an employee who was stealing from the company. Showing the employees about how committed he is has helped increase the employees commitment levels as well.

The other characteristic that I was able to identify about Paul during the interview was that he was full of confidence. Paul's confidence in his business ideas is the reason his company is in operation today. Besides, he has a confidence in his employees, and it is this feeling that he gives them numerous responsibilities. According to James, showing trust in the employees has gone a long way into helping them believe in their abilities. With such support and acceptance, employees can take their personal initiatives that help improve the company's image in the eyes of their customers (Iorg, 2007).

Moreover, I was able to realize that my own confidence acquiring experience was similar to that of James. Right from an early age, my parents started giving me several responsibilities that helped boost my assurance levels. For instance, I could be left home with the responsibility of taking care of my siblings, something that helped me rely on my capabilities in handling various tasks even further. It is the confidence I possess now that made me be able to successfully conduct the interview with one of the most successful managing directors in my local area. Fear of failing or making a mistake has been wiped off me from a young age, and thus I can confidently undertake such mission of interviewing the most successful person from my local area.

Discussion of Followers and Context

One of the things that I was able to identify in the course of the research is that James Pauls behavior was influenced by the subordinate factors. For instance, the strategies that he adopted were to a large extent influenced by the subordinates. It would have been impossible for him to make any key decision regarding the company without having a consult with his subordinates. Besides, the strategies that he adopted were in line with the abilities that his workers possessed. Paul was of the opinion that adopting strategies that suited the employees skills and knowledge were one of the ways through which they could quickly and effectively fulfill their mandate.

The interview that I had with James gave me an opportunity to learn some of the organizational behavior concepts. For instance, I was able to identify how the values that are placed in an organization affect the performance of the employees and the officials. The company's guiding value was to transform the dietary lives of people, and it is for the sake of this value that the stores have a variety of products. The transformational value is the other guiding factor in regards how the employees are treated. The company had the objective of transforming the lives of its employees, something that it achieved through fair remuneration packages. Providing good and favorable working conditions for the employees is the other strategy that the company has adopted as the means of taking care of its employees.

The environment that the company operates in has also influenced the approach that the leader uses in running his organization (French, 2011). For instance, the industry requires a firm operating in it to follow the strict government rules established to protect the people. With this, the company has a strategy to ensure that all the products sold are suitable for human consumption. To achieve this, the company has created a department whose responsibility is to ensure that all the products being sold are of the required regulatory standards.

In the local area, people believe in the power of regular communication. The importance of communication as laid down by the environment that the company operated helped shape some of the strategies that Paul used in running his company. For instance, he created a public relations department that enabled members of the public to express any opinion that they might have concerning the company. Any customer dissatisfaction could be aired using this department. It is important to note that the company was forced to have such communication due to the environment in which it was operating. People from my local area believed in the power of expressing themselves, a feature that they could achieve through effective communication.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the interview with James Paul has given me a chance to learn several things pertaining to leadership and organizational behavior. From the interview, I was able to learn that the leadership of a particular company affects the organizational behavior. The values that a leader possesses are normally transmitted to the employees. The hardworking value that James possessed was transmitted to its workers. As the result, the hardworking value within the whole company is one of the reasons why the company has continued to make annual growth. The other thing that I understood from the interview is that the leadership style that the people in charge of running a company adopt influences how people in that particular company relate. With a democratic style, the employees felt at ease to express themselves even to the company's high management. The employees felt that any opinion that they possessed regarding the running of the company could be integrated.
