The healthcare sector has a variety of fields that the interested individuals can specialize in. There are areas that deal directly with the sick, while others focus on the services revolving around the sick such as admission, transportation, etc. As a result of the evolving medical practices, there numerous new areas of study are introduced to meet the demand for services in the medical sector, from small health centers to the most sophisticated care units (Harmening, 2012). The above scenario has motivated me to pursue a course in Blood Bank Technology. Thus, a Blood Bank Specialist deals directly with the sick as they carry specialized and routine blood tests. They work in blood donation centers, and they play a role in ensuring the correct exchange of blood from donors to recipients (Harmening, 2012). Blood Bank specialists also work in transfusion centers, research centers, and hospital laboratories. The paper discusses the profession of a Blood Bank specialist, the roles played by the specialists in this field, and the possible organizations where they can work.
Blood Bank Specialists perform different roles in the healthcare sector. They help in the identification of antibodies present in the blood as well as work on the detection of blood types. They perform blood tests and check for the presence of viruses before the transfusion is done. They also investigate the recipient’s body response to the donated blood during transfusion.
I was previously involved in the first aid services before selecting the course and I had an opportunity to engage in blood harvesting services. We were trained on how to perform this task, and I successfully executed it when I was taken to the real practice. I was able to make the pre-donation tests to ensure that the donors were in a good condition for the donation process. Thus, it is this experience that has motivated me to pursue a course in the selected medical field. I believe that I posses the necessary skills required for the course. The choice of this course was the result of motivation from friends and former workmates. When I worked as a first aider, I received some encouragement from colleagues who advised me to pursue the course since they were in a position to assist me with the academic thoughts and research ideas. I also saw the need to continue the career that I had started since I had the necessary skills and knew the practical aspect of the course. Coming from the family of medics, I had motivation from my brothers and sisters who also practiced medicine. I have realized that this is a nice course to pursue as it involves caring for the fellow humans.
The Blood Bank Technology specialists can work in different health organizations to support in blood analysis and testing (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2007). Most pathogens enter the body through the blood, and therefore, various infections are transmitted through the blood. Therefore, this means that the continuous blood analysis is essential, which calls for the specialist in these areas. The Community Blood center is one of the organizations that employ Blood Bank Specialists (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2007). The organization handle various blood samples from different donors, and it also performs blood transfusion to individuals with low blood volume. There is also the government Blood Bank that that distributes blood to different sick people who do have sufficient blood counts (Scuracchio et al., 2007). Thus, the organization offers employment to specialists in this area. These specialists help in determining blood contents and the appropriate recipients of a given blood sample. Furthermore, private hospitals are another area that requires the above-mentioned experts. The process of blood testing is a common procedure in the hospitals, whether they are community based health centers or advanced care units. Other organizations that need such specialists include independent laboratories and university-based blood banks.
The above organizations have different ways of handling blood. Thus, in hospitals, regular tests must be performed to identify the viruses contained in the blood, which leads to finding effective ways of treatment. Furthermore, blood bank organizations also have regular tests on the donated blood to ensure safe transfusions to the recipients. Thus, all these activities require specialists who have special knowledge and experience in handling the blood.
The job description that appeals to me the most should include blood testing, blood sampling, blood transfusion, nutritional advice on the food samples, and other related areas (Greer et al., 2010). Besides dealing directly with the patients, I can also act as the overall adviser on various technical health issues since most disorders originate from the blood. I can also fit into my previous job of first aid since the same skills are required when dealing with emergency cases, especially during the accidents when there is requirement of blood for the casualties.
